What this is
Most slots are pure stat items, and for those the best item is the one whose stats score highest against the spec's stat weights, the same DPS-per-point numbers behind the stat priority pages. Every item's stats are scaled to the season ceiling (Myth 6/6 for raid and dungeon drops, the crafted cap for crafted gear) with SimulationCraft's own item scaling, so items are compared at the same level on patch 12.1.0.
Trinkets are mostly about their effects, so that slot comes from the weekly simmed trinket leaderboard instead. Tier pieces sit at rank one of their slot because the set bonus is worth more than any stat difference. Items outside the trinket slot with an on-use or proc effect are ranked on their stats and flagged, since a stat weight can't value an effect.
Frequently asked questions
How is a best-in-slot list made without simming every item?
A stat weight is the DPS one point of a stat adds for the spec, measured by SimulationCraft. Multiplying an item's stats at the season ceiling by those weights gives its DPS value, and ranking items in a slot by that value gives the list. For pure stat items this is as accurate as the weights themselves. Trinkets, where effects matter most, are simmed directly on the trinket leaderboard and copied in.
What about items with procs or on-use effects?
Outside the trinket slot they're ranked on their stats alone and get an effect badge, which means the score leaves out whatever the effect is worth. Sim those on your own character before you commit to one.
Why is the tier piece always first?
The 4-set bonus is worth more than any stat difference in one slot, so the tier piece is pinned first. The items below it are what to wear in your fifth tier slot or before you have the set.
Does this match what top players wear?
Each spec page checks every slot against what the top ten Mythic+ players for that spec wear and points out where they disagree. It never changes the ranking, since ten characters is a small sample and they wear what dropped for them. A disagreement usually means the item has an effect the weights can't see.
Is this a full best-in-slot set with set bonuses and pairings solved?
No. Each slot is ranked on its own against a fixed baseline, with set bonuses held constant, so it shows which item to chase in each slot. To find the best combination of the gear you own, sign in and run Best Gear with your /simc string.
Which item level are items compared at?
Raid and Mythic+ drops at the Myth 6/6 ceiling, crafted gear at the crafted cap, everything else at its fixed item level. That is the same rule the trinket leaderboard uses, so the two agree.
How often does it update?
Every Sunday after the weekly SimulationCraft update, when the stat weights and trinket boards are re-simmed. Each spec page shows the SimC build it used.
